The building of the Cine-Theatre of Borba dates back from the 19th century being later adapted to cinema, contiguous to the building the oral tradition names Casa do Governador (Governor’s House), maybe because it’s the nobler construction inside the Castle.  Its playhouses have a characteristic typology: with pit and 1st and 2nd circles. From 1920 on it started to function as a cinema until the 90s. It has three floors and main entry from the Rodrigo da Cunha Ferreira Street. The Hall has a double right foot headed by a cannon vault where the large bricks which form the pavement of the second floor are set. That’s where the dressing rooms stay with a direct access to the stage through a steep wood-stairway.
In 1950, the Cine-Theatre was the object of a work campaign to construct the stairway with direct access to the fist floor and the sanitary installations, determined by a technical repost of the General Inspection in the 21st of April, 1950. To build the sanitary installations the Town Hall acquired “a compartment contiguous to the theatre”, which overlaps the mentioned building called Casa do Governador.
After several years of inactivity, the Cine-Theatre of Borba will be functioning again. After a survey about its potentialities there was an investment in its recovering. Its placement inside the wall is an important factor as it can be used as an entertaining pole in the Historical Centre of the Town.
The Cine-Theatre of Borba will be animated with cinema sessions, plays, seminars, conferences, among other events that may be adapted to this space.
