Here, where the strategic road between Vila Viçosa and Estremoz passed, the Marquis of Caracena tried to prevent the Portuguese troops to aid Vila Viçosa, where the Spanish intended to destroy the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, symbol of the new dynasty. The Portuguese troops, ruled by the Marquis of Marialva and by the Earl of Galveiras managed to defeat the most powerful army in Europe showing the world that it was most expensive, slow and even impossible for Spain to conquer Portugal . Thus, thanks to this battle the peace with Spain was signed in 1668, starting a new era of prosperity, optimism and wealth for Portugal.
