The Bicas Fountain is deservedly the ex-libirs of Borba. National Monument since 1910, it was built in 1781 by the Town Hall, which assumed his function as protector of the population’s interests in the water supply before private interests. In its shape we can guess the influence of Carlos Mardel’s drawings, designed for Lisbon, decades before. However, the Bicas Fountain intended to be a monument to Borba, not only by the use of marble flattered in the espalier inscription, but also by the reconstitution of the lake where, according to the legend, was found the barbel (barbo) which gave the name to this town. As it was a novelty to the Alentejo, the BIcas Fountain was the model to other monumental fountains built in the region.
This book was published in 2002 by the editor Colibri, and was supported by the Town Hall of Borba and of the Culture Regional Delegation of the Alentejo.
